Mount St. Helens National Monument

We've crossed another state line into the state of Washington, the evergreen state. The White Pass Scenic Byway will take us to two renowned volcanic mountains. First stop, Mount St. Helens.

At 8:32 a.m. on May 18, 1980, the bulging north face of Mount St. Helens collapsed and slid into the valley below. The landslide unleashed a hurricane-force blast across the landscape, removing, toppling, and scorching 230 square miles of forest in three minutes.

Mount St. Helens today.
